Overview
EdShala is an educational social network for students, parents, mentors, counsellors, and institutions. This policy applies to personal information we process in connection with that platform.
It supplements our Terms & Conditions. For help or privacy requests, see Support or email support@edshala.com.
Who and what this covers
This policy covers personal information processed when you use EdShala websites, mobile applications, and services tied to your EdShala account — including onboarding, profiles, feeds, communities, messaging, quizzes, mentorship features, and notifications.
Google account data and Sign in with Google
If you choose Sign in with Google, Google provides EdShala with information from your Google account as part of the sign-in flow (for example, through a secure ID token). Depending on your Google account settings and the sign-in method, this may include:
- Your Google account subject identifier (a stable ID Google associates with your account).
- Your email address and whether Google considers the email verified.
- Your name and profile picture, if made available to EdShala through the sign-in process.
- Technical elements needed to validate the sign-in (for example, token metadata used only for authentication).
How we use Google user data. We use this information solely to provide and improve EdShala's functionality — including to create or log you into your account, display profile details, keep your account secure, and communicate about the service where appropriate. We do not use Google user data for third-party advertising, for selling user data, or for purposes unrelated to EdShala's application features.
Sharing Google user data. We do not sell Google user data. We do not transfer Google user data to third parties for their own independent use or for advertising. We may share data with service providers (such as hosting, authentication, security, or analytics vendors) only where necessary to operate EdShala, under confidentiality and processing terms, and only to provide or improve the service — not for unrelated third-party products. We may disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, and integrity of EdShala and our users.
Google's privacy policy describes how Google processes data when you use your Google account; this policy describes how EdShala handles information once you use our service.
Information we collect
In addition to Google sign-in data, we may collect:
- Account and identity details: name, email, phone, password or auth tokens, role (student, parent, mentor, etc.), and verification status.
- Profile and onboarding information: photo, banner, bio, gender, date of birth, location, languages, interests, academic details, credentials, and preferences you choose to share.
- Content and activity: posts, comments, reactions, media uploads, quiz participation, group membership, follows, messages, notifications, and search or feed interactions.
- Mentorship and marketplace activity: session bookings, listings you view, and related metadata where those features are available.
- Technical and usage data: device type, app or browser version, IP address, log data, cookies or similar identifiers, and security signals needed to operate and protect the platform.
- Communications with us: support requests, feedback, and reports you submit.
How we use information
We use personal information to:
- Provide features you choose to use — profiles, feeds, communities, messaging, mentorship, quizzes, recommendations, and related tools.
- Personalize your experience (for example, interest-based feeds, group suggestions, and relevant content).
- Verify accounts and reduce fraud, spam, and abuse.
- Send service-related messages, security alerts, and responses to your support requests.
- Analyse reliability and improve product design (using aggregated or de-identified data where possible).
- Comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms & Conditions.
How we share information
We do not sell personal information. We may share information in these situations:
- With other users, according to your settings and the feature you use (for example, public profile fields, posts in public groups, or messages you send).
- With service providers who process data on our behalf (hosting, email, analytics, media storage, authentication) under contracts that limit their use.
- With institutions or partners where you explicitly connect or opt in to a program offered on the platform.
- When required by law, regulation, legal process, or to protect the rights, safety, and integrity of EdShala and our users.
- In connection with a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, subject to appropriate confidentiality protections.
Visibility and community features
Educational networking depends on sharing some information with others. Your display name, username, profile photo, bio, interests, and public posts may be visible to other users. Private groups and direct messages are visible to participants and administrators as designed in the product. You can review profile and privacy controls in Settings where available.
Retention and deletion
We retain personal information for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the service, meet legal and security requirements, and resolve disputes. When you delete your account or submit a deletion request, we delete or anonymize personal data within a reasonable period, except where we must retain limited records (for example, security logs, fraud prevention, or legal holds).
To request access, correction, export, or deletion, email support@edshala.com. We may verify your identity before fulfilling requests.
Your choices and rights
Depending on where you live — including under applicable Indian law — you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or port your data, withdraw consent where processing is consent-based, or object to certain processing. You can update much of your profile information in the app. You may disconnect Google sign-in from your Google account settings; doing so may limit certain features until you use another sign-in method.
Students and minors
EdShala is designed for learners, including school and college-age users. If you are under 18, use the Service with a parent or guardian's knowledge and consent. We encourage guardians to discuss safe online behaviour and to contact us if they believe a minor has provided information without appropriate consent.
Security
We use safeguards appropriate to the data we handle, including encryption in transit (such as HTTPS), access controls, authentication protections, monitoring for abuse, and vendor diligence for subprocessors. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; please use a strong password and protect your account credentials.
Storage and international processing
We primarily serve users in India. Your information may be processed in India or in other locations where our service providers operate, subject to appropriate safeguards and this policy.
Changes to this policy
If we materially change how we access, use, store, or share Google user data or other personal information, we will update this page and, where appropriate, provide additional notice in the app or by email so you can review changes before they take effect.
